The Single Onion  #199 Celebrates emerging Black writers in Calgary with this month's edition curated by aloT of Poetry. 

The podium will be graced by Joy Idowu (joyandsorrows) and Kamika Bianca Guerra-Walker. 

The Single Onion is Calgary's Longest Running Poetry Reading Series organised by David Martin.

About the Curator:

aloT of Poetry

aloT of Poetry is is a Nigerian-South African poet and spoken word artist. Fresh off her 2nd participation in the 2023 TD Incubator program at Arts Commons. She has partnered with CSPACE, The Grand Theatre, University of Calgary, and Alberta University of The Arts. 

She has been published in multiple publications including an exhibition at Gallery@501 and two Calgary Poet Laureate Legacy projects. She is passionate about developing the spoken word community through workshops, events and collaborations. 

As the founder of Poetic Designers, she uses her experience as an independent artist, marketing and design skills to help other artists bridge the gap between arts and business and encourage independent artists to show up professionally and authentically online. 

Through sharing her laughter and pain, she encourages everyone to listen to the stories of others, love themselves and be unapologetic about it."

Joy Idowu (joyandsorrows)

Joy Idowu (joyandsorrows) is an upcoming writer and spoken word artist from Calgary. She recently self-published her first poetry book, 'The Trails of a Wild Sunflower, ' available on Amazon and in Owl's Nest Books. Joy likes to incorporate sound and music into her performance when possible to enhance the audience's experience. When she isn't writing, Joy takes voice lessons and is studying to become a chemist at the University of Calgary.

Kamika Bianca Guerra-Walker

Kamika Bianca Guerra-Walker is the definition of a multi-disciplinary visionary: a director, producer, writer, model, actor, poet, filmmaker, visual artist and mental health advocate of Jamaican and Chilean heritage.

She blends various mediums of art to ignite societal change and inspire individuals to always approach life with compassion as their leading principle, triumphing over human instinctive judgment. From 2021 to 2024, Kamika has been engrossed in several esteemed professional development programs and residences in relation to her art as a film director, producer, writer, poet, visual artist, model, actress, public speaker and founder. 

These programs are held by Canada’s most prestigious entities including the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Televisions, Arts Commons, Netflix, TELUS, STORYHIVE, Telefilm, Black Screen Office, BIPOC TV & Film, Black Women in Film Canada, Arts Commons, RBC, TD Bank, Residence Inn by Mariott, Alberta Printmakers, M:ST, Story Money Impact and the Canadian Mental Health Association.
